I know that no online shopping is 100% safe, especially when dealing with person we’ve never met before. However, is there a guidelines as to how to protect oneself from being fraud in online auction sites, for example eBay ?

i_am_nobody,
there is a way to be safe when buying on ebay:
if you are buying on ebay, ALWAYS
pay through PAYPAL and fund it with a CREDIT CARD.
then if anything goes wrong and PAYPAL can’t get you a refund, you then have the option of filing for a CHARGEBACK through your CC provider.
PAY SAFE, STAY SAFE!
NEVER, EVER send anyone WESTERN UNION!
NEVER click on a link in any email!
if you see the words NIGERIA, ROMANIA or CHINA, RUN LIKE THE WIND!
90% + of ALL DESIGNER items on ebay are FAKES, COUNTERFEITS or simply don’t exist.
NEVER make any deals “off ebay”, meaning you must bid and win an actual auction.
if a seller emails you and tells you he will sell to you w/o you being the WINNING BIDDER, report the email and ignore the offer!
do not bid on sellers with less than 99% positive feedback.

you have got a pretty good explanation up there, but from experience (and its a substantive experience) Ebay is a safe online auction site to use. I never had any problem with the transactions… only sometimes delivery got delayed, nothing biggie.
Ebay also has a dispute resolution scheme where you could alert or file notice of dispute if say for example your item never arrived. but i have never had to use anything like that so you can check that out as well from the website.
and I had no issue with dealings with other ebayers from China either.
good luck and have fun!

Just check the sellers feedback so you can get an idea of what other people like you experienced. I think it should
usually be 100% because why would there be a problem????
Some payment methods are more secure so usually paypal or netbank and sometimes you can get insured in case the seller is evil but not always. If your seller has a history of honesty and good service, you’re going to get a deal (90-99% of the time). If you get emails always be cautious since that’s where a lot of the scams happen, whether you’re the buyer or seller.
“One of the most important aspects of purchasing an item on eBay is being sure about the item you want. Knowing the condition of a used item, the authenticity of a collectable or an item’s model number are important factors that can have a huge impact on price. You can always check a Completed Items search to review other similar items that have been sold and at what price.
If you are unsure about the item you are about to bid on or buy, ask the seller a question. A good seller will always welcome enquiries. You can also email previous buyers about their experience with that seller.
To ask a question simply click on the ‘Ask seller a question’ link in the seller information box on all item pages. The seller will then be sent an email with your question and will respond directly.” – ebay
“Use a safe method of payment. Sellers on eBay offer a variety of ways to pay, choose the one you feel most comfortable with.
PayPal offers anyone with an email address a secure way to pay. When you use PayPal your financial details are never shared with anyone else. PayPal is free for buyers and economical for sellers.
Bank Deposit: Buyers can deposit payment directly into the seller’s bank account either online or at most banks.
Escrow: For more expensive items consider using an Escrow service, where your money is held by a trusted 3rd party giving you time to inspect the item. For a small fee, an escrow service holds the buyer’s payment and forwards it to the seller after the buyer receives and approves the item. eBay Australia recommends EscrowAustralia.com.au .
eBay does not recommend sending cash or money via Western Union or Money Gram.” – Ebay

Yes, online shopping, like eBay has no guarantees…you may type your inquiry on eBay’s community answer center, and knowledgeable eBayers will give you the guidelines.

Look at the sellers rating and feedback. Try to buy from sellers who have sold many items and have received positive feedback.
