Where Can I Research The Insurance Company That Is Carrying My Homeowners Policy? ?
By admin on Dec 20, 2009 in homeowners
I’ve had my homeowners policy through 21st Century Insurance for several years now but I recently received a letter that my policy is now handled by Countrywide Insurance Services, Inc. Then , just a few days later someone showed up at my house and was taking pictures of it. I have uneasy feelings about this but I don’t know what to do. What would you do?
I work in the Insurance Industry. It is common for insurance companies to take photos. It really does help you in the event your home burns to the ground. There is then a record of what it looked like in their file. You can investigate an insurance company through a company called:
A.M. Best
This company rates the financial strength. Anything in the A range is good. I would stay away from a company lower than A.

Most probably, your insurance with 21st Century has been cancelled, and your mortgage has forceplaced insurance for you.
Your insurance company will not be changed unless you request it, and you would be notified.
Call 21st Century and get the status of your policy. Then call the Countrywide insurance department and find out what happened.
Forceplaced insurance is MUCH more expensive then a regulare insurance company would offer, plus they cover nothing but the dwelling since they are only concerned about their loan.
You are basically uninsured for everything else.

Who’s the insurance CARRIER? You can look up the CARRIER, the company that insures your house, at http://www.ambest.com, or if they’re publicly traded, you can look at their filings, at http://www.sec.gov.
You can also check complaints at your state insurance department website.
Likely, if the policy has been transferred, they’re doing an inspection and maybe re-underwriting. Nothing to do, except shop it out to someone else.
**21st Century IS an insurance company, owned by AIG, so it’s possible that the AGENT contract has been cancelled**

Try this http://www.bcdisabilities.com/bcdisforum? It might at least give you a hint as to consumer protection / ombudsman services for insurance issues.
